RuneScape developer Jagex expands with first London office

Cambridge-based gaming business Jagex has struck a deal to open its first London office, in a bid by its new Chinese owners to woo tech talent.

The video game developer behind shooter game Block N Load has signed a lease with Great Portland Estates for 10,600 square feet at 30 Broadwick Street in Soho, with top-end rent of around £100 per square foot.

Jagex, founded in 2001 and now boasting 500 staff, was sold in the summer for around $400 million (£321 million) to Chinese investor Zhongji, which wants to bring PC-based fantasy hit Runescape to smartphones.

Leasing agents, Colliers International and Edward Charles & Partners, advised on the offices deal, where there is space for up to 100 new employees. Another new tenant at the building is BCG Digital Ventures.

London’s tech sector is still rapidly expanding — Facebook recently announced plans to go on a hiring spree, and Apple signed a deal to open a large headquarters in Battersea.

Google is also developing a major new office in King's Cross.
