Jagex Announces Runescape’s 2017 Year Ahead

Today, Jagex Ltd released a recap of their plans for 2017, alongside previously unrevealed information, both about this month and those to come.  These updates include new methods of training Invention, a host of new quests, the return of Vic The Trader, the return of Double XP Weekend, and an update to Clue Scrolls.

Mod Mark (Design Director) opened by discussing the hitherto-unannounced Memorial To Guthix.  Releasing on January 9th, this memorial expands on the methods of training the Divination skill, as well as the rewards for doing so, including longer harvesting time for wisps and increased experience from divine locations.  There will also be lore-related revelations about Guthix, Runescape‘s former God of Balance.

Following the theme of lore revelations, Jagex will be releasing a re-imagined version of the Nex boss from the God Wars Dungeon, with new mechanics implemented and a new battleground.  Players will be able to bring as many allies as they desire to the battle, and the conflict will shed new light on her relationship with Zaros, the God of Fate.  Also, Vic The Trader, the semi-annual character who converts unused bonus experience from one skill to another, will be returning in January as well, though he will only be around for a short time.

Mod Osborne (Lead Designer) brought his idea of the spirit of February to the fans, opening the doors for players to offer suggestions and ideas for content they would like to see, as well as encouraging his co-workers to pursue personal projects and passions for the course of the month.  In his words; “It is a whole month dedicated to stuff that doesn’t traditionally get a chance to rise to the top of the release schedule.”  He also disclosed the production of a quest, co-designed by Mod Helen and Mod Nexus, both content developers who have never before had the opportunity to release a quest.

Furthermore, February will see a change to two skilling methods by way of Invention, with two new augmentable tools.  The affected skills were not disclosed, but Mod Osborne stated that they would enable the acquisition of Clue Scrolls from non-combat training, as well as the option to disassemble Invention ingredients as the base material is harvested.  February will be finished off with a Game Jam celebration on the 17th – 20th, during which, players will receive twice as much experience from most activities.

March offers a redesign of the Clue Scroll system, releasing a new tier of Clue Scroll and updated rewards.  Details were vague, as they were for the promised bank rework, which will attempt to remove the clunky interface from item storage, while still keeping hold of the nostalgic elements players desire.  Mod Ollie (Content Developer) did reveal, however, that the improved functionality would include more ways to sort the player’s items, as well as the ability to weed out unneeded ones more readily.
